My vision for education

Culturally responsive pedagogy and literacy

Meeting the needs of our students:

To be an effective teacher, we must meet the needs of our students culturally, relationally, curricularly, and pedagogically. Responding to our students culturally surpasses their gender, racial, or linguistic identity; it encourages educators to encompass all students into a multicultural and diverse curriculum, classroom, and community.

Acquisition of language:

To me, the acquisition of a language is much more than reading-based instruction, but it is listening, speaking, and writing. As an educator, I believe that more meaningful instruction and learning takes place when new content can be linked to a student’s prior knowledge.  Literacy is a necessary foundation for students and through research I am encouraged to believe that literacy is more than reading, but the involvement with language in a meaningful and interactive way.

Teaching practice

Forming the foundation of my teaching

  1. Cooperative learning can be implemented in various ways in the classroom. For foreign language learning, cooperative learning is crucial because it helps students develop their listening and speaking skills. Cooperative learning can be utilized in various ways: stations, jigsaw, and other activities that can be done as a group. Cooperative learning fosters community within the classroom and helps students to feel more confident about their coursework. Students must be aware of their classroom expectation before engaging in cooperative learning activities. An ideal assessment would be a rubric based on participation, accuracy of their activity/assignment, and engagement with the activity.

  2. Teaching proficiency through reading and storytelling (TPRS) is a form of teaching that engages students through storytelling. Since this activity is complete student-centered and student-drive, it is ideal. Students' only rules are to be engaged and focused on the story. For an assessment, at the end of each story, students are given a mini-quiz on the story.

  3. Being culturally relevant to students is very important because no matter what diversity out school has, as an educator, we must know how to stay relevant to our students. This can be done in various ways. Including music into a lesson, specific vocabulary or words, representing all people from all backgrounds, and many others. I can create a classroom environment that fosters culturally relevant pedagogy by recognizing the diversity in my students and honoring it through my teaching strategies. This will definitely contribute to a positive classroom environment and ensure that students' voices are being heard. Finally, I believe this will benefit my assessments because if I am including more relevant information to my students, they will better be able to understand and learn it for assessments.

  4. Role play is a beneficial instructional technique to learn language because your whole body is engaged. This strategy isa often utilized because it increases motivation and encourages students to participate. Students are encouraged to become more physically involved in the lesson, and these lessons typically discourage passivity. There must be time to account for: class environment, props, scripts, casting, rehearsal, performance, and debriefing. Have clear objectives and goals for students so they can easily assess if they have met the objectives. Rubrics and score sheets are adequate examples of assessments because they demonstrate clear behaviors that are acceptable and unacceptable

  5. Self-evaluation is important for both students and the teacher. My cooperating teacher this past semester (fall 2019) had students self-evaluate their classroom behavior and expectations. Self-evaluation can also be used to demonstrate progress to students through the year with  specific objective in mind: writing, speaking, reading, or listening. This could definitely contribute to a more positive classroom environment, since students will be held accountable to themselves for their own actions. This could be considered its own form of assessment, or it could be done at the end of every unit.

  6. Student-directed investigation is a means of introducing research to students. Since it is student-directed, students are motivated by their own inquiry, so their intrinsically motivated to research and answer their question. This type of investigation could be performed in the form of an essay, presentation, or project. There will need to be an established "community of learners" already in place for students to develop this investigation.

on field experience

In practice

Moravian College has granted me various opportunities to work alongside real, practicing teachers, in their classrooms. In the fall 2019 semester, I worked in a middle school classroom: I developed my own lesson plan and taught it, I taught culturally relevant traditions about French culture, and I helped students in the classroom.

As a student-teacher, I was able to work one-on-one with students and help more than if there was only one teacher in the classroom. I used various questioning strategies to help engage students more deeply in the material. I also used instructional tools such as videos to enhance student learning.

Having the opportunity to teach my own lesson to a class, was extremely beneficial for me. I have learned a lot about the process of developing a lesson plan for students. I had the opportunity to talk with my cooperating teacher before presenting my lesson many times and she gave me advice for how to better facilitate the lesson. TPR was a new strategy for me and I was excited to implement it. TPR, or total physical response engages students with language learning devices to help them learn foreign language more effectively.

Being an educator is not only advocating for your students, but it is also recognizing and caring for the community and environment around you. In order for reflective teaching to work, teachers must constantly frame and reframe problems in different situations in order to achieve the best possible outcome.

Home-stay

This is the view from my apartment, which I share with my roommate, Morgan. Living in a home-stay was a great choice for me because I wanted to immerse myself in the language and culture for the three months I'm here. I am centrally located to the metro, an amazing boulangerie, and my university. (upd. 02/12)

ICLF & more

My focus is French language, so I am in a language and cultures program at ICP. Currently taking 18 credit hours, I am fortunate enough to have Wednesday and Friday off. I have nine hours of French language, 3 hours of architecture, 3 hours of France & the world, and 3 hours of literature. While courses are much longer than in the states, they seem to pass fairly quickly. There are fewer notes/grades, as well as less homework, as coursework is expected to be finished in class. Personal Life

Transitioning to Parisian Life

My first major difficulty was changing my cell phone plan. I was in need of a SIM card, since I could not keep paying for a $10/day travel pass with Verizon. I went through SFR, whom I later found out is one of the more expensive companies en France. I hope to switch at the end of this month.

Some other problems occurred during the first week of classes, I got sick and my credit card was cancelled. Mais, c'est la vie! (upd. 02/12)

surprising to me

Parisian Culture

-lots of homeless people
-stores sell everything individually
-wine/alcohol is inexpensive
-service in restaurants is comme ci comme ça
-lots of graffiti
-ice cubes are a rarity
-each arrondissement is distinct and unique
-parisians talk fast
-clothes are très important
-smoking-even in the metro

Upcoming plans

In Paris & beyond

Next weekend, Morgan and I are seeing the Jonas Brothers à Paris!

The weekend of March 28 & 29 we have another excursion to Brussels.

Hoping to plan more travel after my credit card is back in my hands!

St. malo

Dinner, bar-hopping, & a carnival

St. Malo is a must see for everyone. This quiet town has amazing food, is on the coast of France, and is easily accessible from Paris. While the streets are quiet, the restaurants and bars lively and amicable. I hope to go back soon.

Dinner, Gelato, the Eiffel Tower, & Pickpockets

We originally wanted fondu, but we needed a reservation. So we settled on an amazing Italian restaurant in the area and we were very pleased. After that we got gelato and macaroons. On a whim, we decided to go to the Eiffel Tower. So we hopped on the metro and landed within a few blocks. In order to see the lights sparkle on the hour, we had to wait a little so we took some pictures. When the moment came, we saw someone being pickpocketed! and decided it was a good time to leave the area.

La greve

Woes of Paris

Paris is not all sunshine, croissants, and smiles all the time. Monday (2/17/20) there was a strike on metro - my main form on transportation. Thankfully, I could take the bus, but on the way we had some unexpected rain and got soaked. This week has been filled with challenges as I wait patiently for my new credit card and rely heavily on my roommate for cash for meals and such. Every place has its challenges and on Monday I was definitely frustrated with Paris, myself, and everyone. (upd. 2/19/20

Shopping & More

We shopped around the Champs Elysses, had an amazing Italian lunch, and accidentally bought a $50 pocket mirror (oops). We went to Galerie de Lafayette and spent some time looking at beauty products and fashion. It is almost like Times Square, filled with people and shoppers.

Sundays in Paris

Coziness

(2/23/20) We desperately needed to get some homework finished, and what better place than a cozy, Parisian cafe. The music (that very much resembled my own playlists), the collegiate and vintage atmosphere, and the aroma of coffee added to a perfect Sunday afternoon in Paris.

A Cute 50s Diner

With a very retro feel, Morgan and I have passed this diner about 10 or so times and we finally stopped for lunch today (2.26.20). It is situated near Notre Dame and attracts many college students. Also, great news, I finally got my credit card back today! So very good day, all in all!

friday fun

Plans!

(2.28.20) Today we planned some trips for spring break! A group of us will be going to Amsterdam and Munich over spring break (4/14-19). This will be a great trip because it is right before my birthday and we will also get to see the tulips in Amsterdam. Then, later that night we went to some pubs for some drinks. We also stopped at a crepe stand and got some crepes from the nicest man.

getting a tattoo

To Love and To Be Loved

(2.29.20) No, it did not hurt! Yes, I have been wanting this tattoo for a while! I love this quote, and it is indeed a line from a One Direction song so that's also a plus. So, our not so on a whim decision to get tattoos! (upd.3.8.20)

Museums and more

Musee d'Orsay

(3.1.20) So our original intention was to go to the Louvre, but thanks to our friend the Coronavirus, the Louvre has been closed until further notice. We crossed the Pont des Arts and went to Orsay instead! I really liked it there because it was originally a train station but has been redesigned into a museum which is incredibly beautiful and creative. (upd.3.8.20)

surviving coronavirus

Ok, maybe just a sinus infection

With my frequent visits to the pharmacy this past week for thermometers, antibiotics, and something else that requires and even longer and more embarrassing story...I have become a regular at our local pharmacies! The paranoia surrounding the coronavirus is almost amusing, but I became one of the fear mongers when I thought I was inflicted this past week. Hopefully the panic will soon subside and and we can return to NOT washing our hands (note

Communicating

Family Life in a Home-Stay

The youngest daughter in our host-family enjoys reading, painting, and playing games with Morgan and me. Communicating with a four year old can definitely be challenging at times, as she doesn't know we are learning, but it also helps us to do our best when talking with her. We celebrated her birthday this past week with cake and presents at dinner. (upd. 3/11/20)

The bad news

Making the most out of a bad situation

Thursday, the 12th, I woke up early for class and checked my phone as I always do. Immediately the news struck me. I told Morgan who was asleep below me. We both sat there for an hour with feeling of sadness, anger, and sickness. We were so confused. After an hour, we both decided that even though the situation sucks, we must make the best of it.

eating our weight in pastries

Splurge

I'd love to say that I practiced some sort of moderation on my last few days in Paris, but that would be a lie. I ate way too many pastries, spent way too much money, and took way too many pictures.

A proper Parisian breakfast

Elegance

On our last day in Paris, we had the most adventures. We went to a delicious breakfast at Angelina Paris, near the Louvre. I enjoyed it.

Photo time

Rue Cremieux

Paris was sad to see us go on our last day, it was dreary and cloudy. We made the most of it by visiting this brightly colored street with brightly painted colored homes. We made sure to get plenty of photos.

going home

CDG --> JFK

On Sunday I woke up at 3:20, after a quite sleepless night, to be transported to CDG for my 8:40 flight. With fear and sadness lingering in my heart, I left my host family, and a tired Morgan. The flight was filled with other study abroad students, anxious to be returning home. When we arrived to JFK, we were ordered to wait on the plane until the CDC temperature-checked us. After that, it was a quick and easy process.

Well placed

I will save my tears for another day

This experience has told me so much about myself, others, and my future. I will be forever grateful for the friends I made, the experiences I had, and the amazing pastries I devoured. Merci, Paris.

Francophone Project

6th-grade

I created a Francophone project for my exploratory-level students. They created it in English since they have limited language skills. The objective was to explore other countries that speak French or have cultural liens to France. The goals of the projects were to explore different environments, learn about new cultures, and expand their knowledge about different communities and groups. I created a modeled example for students to refer to. I also made a template for students to use. Student work proved that they understood the concept and achieved the goals. This gives students an opportunity to show the research that they completed. This is a great project for beginner language learners because the culture within it is not too complex and they can learn more than just the language.

My Pedagogy

Brandon Brown Chapter 1-5 Assessment

7th-grade

I created an authentic, project-based, and student-centered assessment for a short story 7th-grade students have been reading. The short story, Brandon Brown veut un chien, is a story that students have been studying for about 2 months. We have read five chapters together and students have enjoyed the content of the story. Instead of completing a typical test on the five chapters, I decided to allow students the choice of project-based assessment. Students were given the choice between Canva, Flipgrid, AutoDraw, Make Beliefs Comix, and Newspaper Generator. These different choices allow students to demonstrate their ability in the content of the story and their ability to perform in the language.

Since we have used many of these tech tools in class before, I was confident that students would be able to excel at this assessment. I gave students examples of the different assessments so they would have clear instruction on the project. With the in-person students, I was able to go over my expectations and clearly explain the outline of the project. Most students were excited to begin and illustrate their mastery of the story.

I received submissions demonstrating student excellence and I am proud of their use of language in the projects, their ability to follow directions, and their ability to perform in an asset-based setting.
